COALITION OF OWNERS OF SMALL SCALE REFINERIES IN IJAW NATION AND NIGER DELTA (COSSRINND) PROPOSE TO SELL CLEAN FUEL AT N100 PER LITRE TO CUSHION THE EFFECTS OF REMOVAL OF PETROLEUM OIL SUBSIDY
With a view to ameliorating the suffering of the masses of Nigeria and neighbouring communities, Coalition of Owners of Small Scale Refineries In Ijaw Nation and Niger Delta (COSSRINND) has proposed to roll out clean and affordable petroleum products to meet the needs of domestic and international consumption if allowed to buy and refine crude which is available to them at their environment.
This declaration is coming on the heels of the agitations and protests that have greeted the removal of Petroleum Subsidy by the Nigerian government owing to massive corruption in the process, which has resulted in a huge loss of revenue by the Nigerian government.
The Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during his inauguration speech had declared the removal of the petroleum products subsidy, which resulted to over 400% hike in the price of the products within and outside the country and caused severe hardship to the citizens of the country and the residents of neighbouring communities.
In view of this turn of the events, the members of the Coalition of Owners of Small Scale Refineries In Ijaw Nation and Niger Delta (COSSRINND) during it's mid- year review and mid year projections forecast announced it's desire to stem the tide of the hardship through designing and implementing a road map that would enable members engage with the Nigerian government and other stakeholders within and outside the state to create the enabling and safe environment to meet the needs of Nigerians and others by providing alternative petroleum product refining capacity that will gradually grow the industry to accommodate more professional and technical components to develop the local refining capacity of ijaws and the community of oil producing communities that have the crude in abundance.
The Chairman of the Coalition, Comrade Ebi Francis noted that if given the opportunity, the local refinery operators could gradually apply for and obtain licenses to operate their refineries in more safe and healthy conditions, and produce the quantity of the products to satisfy local consumption. He added that with the interest displayed and the willing commitment of members of this coalition, petroleum products and harnessing of the bye-products could be developed to reduce the cost of the products in the country to N100 per liter of fuel within a short time.
He pointed out that gradually, the emissions would be controlled and waste management practices will be inculcated to meet indetetnational best practices and standards. Adding that God blessed the Ijaw Nation with both the crude and ways to harness the benefits, but the international community has conspired to deprive the Ijaws a sense of belonging even when strangers/foreigners are given opportunity to make mistakes and pollute the surrounding environment for their people without any tangible benefits to the Ijaw and other people in the Niger Delta region.
He called on Ijaws and other Niger Deltans at home and abroad to rally round each other by supporting this vision to have a sustainable petrochemical industry that can drive the Ijaws to economic prosperity. He said building a sustainable refining capacity and opening the business potentials for ijaw people and Niger Deltans in the industry remains a cardinal policy direction for the peace and development of the Niger Delta region.
