NGOs BERATES NYSC, NIGERIA POLICE FOR HIDING AWAY CORPS MEMBER WHO DEFILE PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPIL AT HIS PLACE OF PRIMARY ASSIGNMENT INA ASAMABIRI COMMUNITY IN SAGBAMA LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF BAYELSA STATE - CALLS FOR SACK OF STATE COORDINATOR MRS OJUGO ELIZABETH IYOWUNA
A group of organisations including the Niger Delta Congress - Bayelsa State chapter, Rural Peoples' Assembly (RPA), IzonFest Development Foundation (IDF) and Tuebi Sapere-Obi Foundation (TSF) have called for justice for 12 years old Miss Esther a victim of defilement, and condemned the attitude of the Nigeria Police Force and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over the lackadaisical attitude in handling such sensitive criminal cases such as defilement, and for attempting to sweep such a case involving a corps member Mr. Ogbe Jonathan serving at the Primary School in Asamabiri community and 12 years old Esther, a pupil of the primary school, under the rug.
The incident which was reported to the Nigeria Police and NYSC in early September, 2021 is yet to receive attention or response from the state coordinator of the NYSC in the State almost three months after, even when it is obvious that defilement cases are time bound cases and corps members are available for a short period before they return to their states of origin, even as the said corps member is due to pass-out in December, 2021.
When contacted about the matter after receiving the Petition filed by the father of the minor through his lawyer, the Gender Department of the Bayelsa State Command of Nigeria Police Force insisted that unless funds are made available to mobilise them to effect arrest on the corps members, there was nothing they could do. And so far, all efforts made to have these agencies take responsibility for the enforcement of the rule of law in their various institutions have fallen on deaf ears.
On further inquiries to the NYSC Camp after several unreturned phone calls and visits to the state Secretariat, the Director in charge of Corps Members Welfare responded to a team of Representatives of the NGOs that they would prefer that the matter is settled without involving the police authorities, and insisted that the minor had obviously consented to the sexual advances by the corps member, because Jonathan had had the illicit affair with the minor Esther of about 12 years old on about three different occasions and the minor didn't tell her parents till the mother raised alarm after noticing blood on her daughter's panties while washing her cloths.
Several calls put to the Zonal Inspector and Sagbama Local Government Inspector revealed that none of them were concerned that predatory corps members were being sent by the NYSC to prey on the innocence of pupils and children in public institutions under their watch, as no interest was shown by the authorities at various levels to address the situation.
Despite several letters and reminders to the State Coordinator, no reasonable responses have been received on this issue at the time of filing this report, even as the Representatives of the various NGOs now insist that such persons such as Mrs Ojugo Elizabeth Iyowuna, the Bayelsa State Coordinator and other insensitive leaders of such institutions saddled with responsibility of managing community and youths development should be relieved of their duties for failing to identify with the plight of vulnerable people in the constitutiencies that they are paid to superintend.
The organizations have also threatened that unless Mr. Ogbe Jonathan is produced to face criminal proceeding in a court of competent jurisdiction a fortnight from the date of this publication, they will be forced to stage a peaceful protest at the NYSC State Secretariat and the State Police Command Headquarters demanding the sack of the state coordinator to drive home their point and ensure that the world is alerted of this abnormal chain of events under the Bayelsa State Command of the Nigeria Police Force.
